The history of the 1st Cavalry is linked to cavalry units fighting as far back as the American Civil War (1861-65). The first of these units was formed in 1855 In August 1921, these units were merged into the 1st Cavalry Division of the U.S. Army During reorganizations in the 1930s and 1940s, more and more of the division's cavalry units were gradually reduced, and in 1943 the unit was converted to an infantry division In 1944, it joined the fighting of World War II by landing on the Admiralty Islands in the Pacific. On 20 October 1944 it landed at Leyte Gulf in the Philippines, where it operated until the end of the war On 2 September 1945 it entered Japanese soil and was the first American unit to set foot in Tokyo Occupation duty in Japan was interrupted by the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950. The division returned to Japan in 1952. Between 1957-1965, it serves again in Korea During the Vietnam War, the infantry division becomes an aeromobile division, using helicopters for transport and drops. With this new tactic, the division successfully participates in numerous missions (Ia Drang Valley, Quang Tri, Hue, Khe Sanh). The division leaves Vietnam in June 1972, one of its battalions, the famous 7th Cavalry, stays for 2 months longer After returning from Vietnam, the division's assignment changes again - in June 1972. The division briefly participated in the Persian Gulf War (1990-91) and in the 2004-2005 fighting in occupied Iraq The division's base is Fort Hood, Texas The Vietnam variant is used by the division's Vietnam War veterans Dimensions.
